Have you ever woken up to your alarms only to realize that you’ve snoozed a million times and its 8 o’clock and you have to leave the house in 15 mins to get to work on time?
To me it’s been happening way too often these days. With 15 mins to get ready, I would just reach for my April Skin cushion, throw on a 5-minute make up look and I’m good to go.
April Skin Cushion in White
This has been a big hit in South Korea and Hong Kong, it was incredibly hard to get my hands on this little compact. I ended up having to order online for these but unfortunately the black and pink version were out of stock so I couldn’t do a comparison between the three compacts. (*April Skin, feel free to hit a girl up if you’re reading this, I’d love to try those two as well 😍 )
What’s so good about this magic snow cushion?
One thing I absolutely adore about this product is the coverage, one swipe goes a long way. As a cushion foundation, it has all the competencies to provide hydration for the day and cover all the blemishes, all the while being very compact and light to carry around in your purse.
I opted for the colour #23 Natural Beige for a more natural (tanned) colour, which I believe would look even better on me in winter as I’m currently quite tanned from all the summer boat trips. The applicator sponge that comes with the compact can be used to swipe along your face or pat along the areas that needs the most coverage, leaving your skin silky soft and blemish-free.
The white compact is for dry and normal skin, which again suits mine. I would again say its perfect for winter with the product providing excellent moisture throughout the day. With the sleek design and a decent sized mirror, it allows you to easily touch-up anytime anywhere.
What I don’t like about this cushion.
The downside is: although I’m a big fan of hydration I also love products that provides a matte finish look, and that is the complete opposite of the Korean trend. To achieve a complete matte look from this product, it is merely impossible, unless you put quite a lot of finishing powder on. By experience it would last you half a day in the office looking still quite polished/matte after dusting powder on top in the morning, but I would definitely need to touch up by lunchtime to prevent looking too dewy.
One simple trick to prevent looking too cake-y is to swipe one thin layer of April Skin on top by lunchtime and apply finishing power (any brands, I like using Armani or Make Up Forever) with a brush (not the compact sponge). This way the powders will be going on as thin layers and lightly dust your face to tone down the dewiness and set your cushion foundation for another few hours.
This also say a bit about how the product runs off my face during the day and needs touch-ups every now and then. Definitely not a product I would use if I’m not planning to bring my make-up bag along for sneaky touch-ups.
On the side note, this cushion foundation failed the foundation-transfer test, which means – when I hug my boyfriend, and I did so purposely on a white t-shirt, some of the foundation residues would be rubbed onto his shirt (sorry Colin if you’re reading this). This obviously isn’t a big problem as it’s quite common for non-waterproof foundation/ oily foundations, but do bear this in mind and be extra careful when you wear whites.
Whether it is for on-the-go make up touch-ups or simple morning make up routine, this little angel can provide a decent amount of coverage with simply one swipe.
Overall, I think this will be a good purchase for its price (around HKD 88-168, depending on which drugstore has promotions), especially if you’re looking for a compact enough cushion to bring with you on a daily basis. But do bear in mind that it does make your face quite shiny, so if you have oily skin I might not be recommending you to try this, but if you have dry skin, this should do as an affordable everyday make up compact.
